Director- Media Relations

Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is currently seeking a dynamic professional to join our Communications department as a
Director- Media Relations.The Director – Media Relations sets Habitat for Humanity’s media relations strategy with a strong focus on
attracting high-value, earned, U.S. national media that elevates Habitat’s position as a prominent thought leader across the housing spectrum—with particular emphasis on affordable housing and homeownership—housing innovation, and global advocacy. The Director – Media Relations is responsible for managing a team of three engaged in the following activities:
proactive ongoing media outreach that elevates Habitat’s mission, programs, initiatives, and senior leadership;
handling incoming media inquiries;
writing, editing and reviewing media materials such as press releases, media alerts, contributed articles, targeted messaging, and talking points;
coordinating media training for senior leadership and subject matter experts;
monitoring Habitat’s media coverage and providing recommendations and analysisbased on the coverage; and
collaborating with internal teams to provide critical media counsel to Habitat affiliates dealing with sensitive crisis situations, and proactively as requested. The Director – Media Relations also oversees the senior specialist of donor media relations, who manages media benefits and outreach opportunities for Habitat’s corporate, cause marketing and foundation partnerships.

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

**Develop, lead and execute targeted and comprehensive media relations strategies for Habitat for Humanity International initiatives, campaigns, events, disaster response efforts and corporate partner news, supervising the media relations team as well as coordinating with internal stakeholders.

**Cultivate and maintain relationships with key media professionals to engage target audiences and boost brand awareness; use these relationships to generate and maximize positive and quality earned media coverage for Habitat.

**Drive and support message development and talking points for interviews, initiatives, campaigns, disaster recovery and crisis communications.

**Manage crisis communications and provide media relations counsel to Habitat affiliates as necessary or requested.

**Manage incoming media inquiries, annual surveys and award opportunities, donor communication requests.

**Write, edit and review media materials such as press releases, media advisories, messaging, talking points, media pitches, contributed articles and opinion pieces, and interview briefing documents.

**Oversee corporate, cause marketing and foundation media and communication strategy and benefits execution.

**Lead media training and interview briefings for senior leadership, including the CEO, and subject matter experts across the organization.

**Monitor Habitat for Humanity’s media coverage and provide recommendations and analysis that informs ongoing media strategy.

**Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum:

**Education: Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, mass communications, media studies, communications studies, or English

**Years of Related Experience: At least 8-10 years of directly related professional experience in public relations or journalism, along with 3 consecutive years as a people leader Proven ability to work collaboratively within a team and cross-functionally

**History of success driving quality media coverage in top-tier media outlets

**Proven experience providing effective crisis communications counsel

**Outstanding written communications skills, with mastery of AP style.

QUALIFICATIONS:

**High level of expertise engaging and knowledge about U.S. media

**Proven ability to boost awareness and drive calls-to-action for campaigns, programs and initiatives through earned media opportunities

**Demonstrated acumen in leadership and people management, including coaching, training, and motivating employees to new levels of excellence

**Outstanding oral communications skills, with ability to develop and deliver effective presentations

**Ability to identify needed relationships and alliances within the organization that increase likelihood of success

**Cross-cultural competence

PREFERRED – in addition to minimum:

**Master’s degree in one of the fields listed above or one that is complementary, such as social work, marketing, nonprofit management

**Experience working for a public relations consultancy; as a media industry professional; within nonprofit communications; or a combination

**Existing relationships with national reporters and media outlets that would be beneficial to Habitat’s media relations work
